Dr. Messmer received a B.S. from the University of North Dakota in Fisheries and Wildlife and also in Biology. He later received a M.S. in Botany and in Regional and Community Planning from North Dakota State University. He also holds a PhD in Animal and Range Sciences from North Dakota State University.

Dr. Messmer has a variety of professional experience. He has worked as biological technician and biologist for the ND Game and Fish Department, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and ND Department of Transportation. He served as a wildlife extension specialist and professor at ND State University.

Today, Dr. Messmer is stays busy serving many roles.  He is a Professor in the College of Natural Resources, a Wildlife Extension Specialist with USU Extension Services, the Associate Director of the Jack H. Berryman Institute, a Quinney Professor for Wildlife Conflict Management, and holds a position on the Board of Directors of the Mule Deer Foundation.

Dr. Messmer is a member of several professional societies including The Wildlife Society and the Society for Range Management. He was the Past President of North Dakota, Utah, and Central Mountain Plains Section of The Wildlife Society and was recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of The Wildlife Society Bulletin, 2006-2007.

Dr. Messmer has had an honorable military career as well. He has been the Commander of the 200th Medical Detachment, US Army Reserve, since 1998. The unit specializes in Preventive Medicine. Dr. Messmer was deployed with his unit for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

Dr. Messmer’s interests include research, teaching, and extension activities focused on identifying, implementing, and evaluating conservation strategies and technologies designed to achieve natural resources conservation and sustain local communities and economies through increased community awareness and action. He is particularly interested in re-evaluating contemporary natural resource management policies and paradigms regarding the contribution of private lands and local communities to conservation.
